Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday 13th July 2025 in a London hospital, aged 82, diplomatic sources confirmed in the British capital.

General Buhari first ruled Nigeria for 20 months between 1984 and 1985, before he was overthrown in a military coup by General Ibrahim Babangida. He was elected Nigerian President in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 until 2023, when he handed over to incumbent President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, of the same ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari’s outward personality as a man of integrity contributed to his election as president of Africa’s most populous nation in 2015 after several unsuccessful attempts. However, his critics blame him for leaving the country in a worse state than he met it.

The cause of his death was not disclosed, but Buhari exhibited symptoms of illness and old age during his eight-year mandate, resulting in unfounded rumours about his death. He spent several months in London for medical treatment during his tenure. ##
